Regular exercise, overweight/obesity and sedentary lifestyle cause adaptive changes in thiol–disulfide homeostasis

Abstract: Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis is considered to have critical roles in maintenance of physiological functioning. We aimed to reveal whether there is any specific aberration in thiol-disulfide homeostasis in three distinct categories of individuals, including those who 1) exercise regularly (fitness group), 2) have a sedentary lifestyle (sedentary group) and 3) are overweight or obese (overweight/ obese group). 72 male individuals were included in the study, 21 of whom were in fitness group, 28 of whom wer… Show more

“…Another limitation is that measurements were not performed at the end of a long period of detoxification. Life style, exercise, and obesity have also been reported to affect TDH homeostasis [34]. In our study, although the BMI of the patient and control groups were similar, their life style and duration of exercise were not questioned.…”

“…There was no significant difference between these groups in the native thiol groups. In terms of the total number of thiol groups, the highest value was found among people who exercise regularly and the lowest among people who lead a sedentary lifestyle [ 34 ]. In our study, we assessed the concentration of thiol groups per gram of protein.…”

“…Albumin is one of the protein thiols that is abundant in plasma ( Kundi et al, 2015 ). Gol et al (2019) indicated that the total thiol pool that stands for antioxidant capacity is of insufficient function in sedentary people. Thus, in conditions associated with increasing oxidative stress, stimulation of the antioxidant defense and protein thiols may be not sufficiently effective in subjects with sedentary lifestyle ( Gol et al, 2019 ; Tebay et al, 2015 ).…”
