Reinforcing cast iron with composite insert

Abstract: The paper presents a proprietary method of making composite cast iron (eutectic) locally reinforced with ceramics. The research included making casts with a ceramic layer, its percentage of the surface was 30%. The research included abrasive wear resistance according to ASTM G 65-00. As a result of the research it has been found that the infiltration of the molten metal into the ceramic preform mainly affects the correct production of the cast with local reinforcement. The research results also have proven tha… Show more

“…Increasing interest around surface layers and elements reinforced with the core caused their very dynamic developement. Improving the usable properties, extending the life of tools and subassemblies, and also reducing the production time and production costs are just a few of the advantages of using surface layers [1][2][3][4].…”

“…The processes which take a place inside the mold cause the creation of a cast with a permanent combination of two chemically different materials with different properties. The big advantage of using this method is that the obtained layer is created in the one process -casting, and the technology does not differ from the production of castings -it requires only pre-preparation of the insert (preform) [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. * Corresponding author: agnieszka.dulska@polsl.pl…”

“…They are artificially manufactured and consist of metallic matrix and reinforcing phase of carbide, boride or oxide particles in the form of powders, fibres, lamellae as well as carbon microspheres. These materials are often manufactured by mixing ceramic particles with aluminium, magnesium, copper and nickel casting alloys [1,2] or by infiltration of porous preform [3]. The materials fabricated in this way exhibit good wear resistance while showing low impact strength resulting from a lack of coherence between ceramic particles and the matrix.…”
