Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are considered highly-efficient agents for conferring salt tolerance in host plants and improving soil fertility in rhizosphere. However, information about the inoculation of beneficial microbes on halophytes in arid and semi-arid regions remains inadequate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of AMF (Glomus mosseae) inoculation, alone or in combination with PGPR (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), on biomass accumulation, morphological characteristics, photosynthetic capacity, and rhizospheric soil enzyme activities of Elaeagnus angustifolia L., a typical halophyte in the northwest of China. The results indicate that, for one-year-old seedlings of Elaeagnus angustifolia L., AMF significantly promoted biomass accumulation in aboveground organs, increased the numbers of leaves and branches, and improved the leaf areas, stem diameters and plant height. AMF-mediated morphological characteristics of aboveground organs favored light interception and absorption and maximized the capacities for photosynthesis, transpiration, carbon dioxide assimilation and gas exchange of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. seedlings in saline soil. AMF also promoted root growth, modified root architecture, and enhanced soil enzyme activities. Elaeagnus angustifolia L. was more responsive to specific inoculation by AMF than by a combination of AMF and PGPR or by solely PGPR in saline soils. Therefore, we suggest that G. mosseae can be used in saline soil to enhance Elaeagnus angustifolia L. seedlings growth and improve soil nutrient uptake. This represents a biological technique to aid in restoration of saline-degraded areas.

Salt is among the most harmful agents that negatively influences crop yield. Alfalfa is an important perennial forage crop that exhibits wide cultivar variations in salt tolerance. Developing salt‐tolerant alfalfa plants is a promising way to utilize salinized land. A comprehensive method was developed to achieve reliable and effective evaluation of alfalfa salt resistance. This included principal components, membership functions and cluster and stepwise regression analyses. These were used to analyse the salt tolerance coefficients of 14 traits and to evaluate 20 diverse alfalfa cultivars at the seedling stage. The various morphological root parameters of six alfalfa cultivars with contrasting salt tolerance were also tested by a scanning apparatus. According to the comprehensive evaluation value (D value), one highly salt‐tolerant, two salt‐tolerant, four moderately salt‐tolerant and 13 salt‐sensitive alfalfa cultivars were screened. A mathematical equation for the evaluation of alfalfa salt tolerance was established: D′ = −0.126 + 0.667SFW + 0.377SDW + 1.089K+/Na+ + 0.172SFW/RFW (R2 = 0.988; average forecast accuracy of 96.95%), where four indices were closely related to the salt tolerance: shoot fresh weight, ratio of shoot fresh weight to root fresh weight, shoot dry weight and ratio of K+ to Na+ in the shoot. We also found that SSA correlated strongly with SFW, SDW, K+/Na+, D values, while SRV correlated obviously with SFW, SFW/RFW and D values after 150 mm NaCl treatment. In conclusion, the SFW, K+/Na+, SDW, SFW/RFW, SSA and SRV could be used as indicators of salt tolerance in alfalfa seedlings grown under 150 mm NaCl treatment.

Abstract‘Gannong No. 2’ triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack) is a cold‐resistant annual forage crop variety, which can be planted as artificial pasture to solve the problem of forage shortage in the Gannan alpine grazing area of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. However, the optimal nitrogen fertilization rate and seeding density for obtaining high yield and quality forage are still unknown. In this study, the effects of nitrogen fertilization rate and seeding density on the forage yield and quality of autumn‐sown ‘Gannong No. 2’ triticale were studied. We used a split‐plot design, with five nitrogen fertilization rates assigned to the main plots, namely 0 (A1), 120 (A2), 240 (A3), 360 (A4), and 480 kg N ha−1 (A5), and five seeding densities assigned to subplots: 506 × 104 (B1), 675 × 104 (B2), 843 × 104 (B3), 1011 × 104 (B4), and 1180 × 104 seeds ha−1 (B5). Significant differences in lodging rate, tiller number, hay yield, crude protein content, neutral detergent fibre, and relative feed value were observed at different fertilization levels. Significant differences were found in lodging rate, plant height, tiller number, hay yield, contents of neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre, dry matter digestibility, and relative feed value among the seeding density treatments. The interaction of nitrogen fertilization rate and seeding density significantly affected forage yield and quality, with the A3B3 treatment having the highest comprehensive evaluation value. In alpine grazing areas of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, 240 kg N ha−1 and 843 × 104 seeds ha−1 should therefore be used for autumn‐sown triticale.
