Relation between primary and secondary metabolism in plant cell suspensions

Abstract: Cell suspensions of Morinda citrifolia are able to produce large amounts of anthraquinones (AQ) when they are cultivated on a B5-medium containing 1 mg 1-1 naphtyl acetic acid (NAA); this production is inhibited by addition of 2,4-dichloro-phenoxyacetic acid (2,4-9). Also during cultivation on 1 mg 1-l 2,4-D AQ-production is absent. It appeared that in the presence of NAA a kind of 'AQ-production' program is switched on: cell division rate is low as well as metabolic activity, while endogenous sugar levels are … Show more

“…Overall, the effect of elicitors on cell growth is dependent on elicitors, used concentrations or conditions, plant species, the stage when the elicitor is applied, etc. Elevated secondary metabolism is often negatively correlated with cell growth (van der Plas et al 1995), but in this study, the production of anthocyanin and phenolic acid was stimulated by chitosan, pectin Fig. 4 Antioxidant activity (a), medium pH value (b) and conductivity (c) of V. vinifera cell culture.…”

“…In our findings, clone H5 line has a rapid accumulation of biomass and secondary metabolite; however, the PGR treatment did not enhance biomass production and tended to reduce fresh weights. Plant growth and defenses are restricted by their internal resources, and secondary metabolism often is negatively correlated with cell growth (Van Der Plas et al 1995 ). In addition, hairy root cultures must strike a balance between growth processes and the production of defensive compounds.…”

“…Indeed, it must be stressed that the enhanced production comes from the enhanced activity of the enzymes involved in the phenolic pathway, including phenylalanine ammonia lyase and chalcone synthase. In addition, the enzyme activity of PEP (phosphoenolpyruvate)-carboxylase is enhanced, and this suggests a reallocation from sucrose production to defensive metabolite production [ 15 , 98 , 101 , 141 , 142 , 143 , 144 , 145 , 146 , 147 , 148 ].…”
