Relation of isoflavones and fiber intake in childhood to the timing of puberty

Abstract: Girls, but not boys, with higher prepubertal isoflavone intakes appear to enter puberty at a later age. Fiber intake in this sample of healthy white girls and boys was not relevant for puberty timing.

“…It was found that later menarche was associated with not only higher fibre intake, but also higher intake of its components cellulose and lignin (P for trend = 0·0269, 0·0090 and 0·0269, respectively) (67) . The association between isoflavone and dietary fibre intake in childhood to the timing of puberty was also studied in a German cohort (81) . Multiple puberty markers such as age at take-off, age at peak height velocity, age at voice break for boys and age at menarche for girls were examined.…”

“…Soy isoflavones exert weak estrogenic effects that could influence pubertal development. Cheng et al (18) reported that childhood isoflavone intake was related to a later age at menarche in German girls, although estimates were adjusted for baseline body composition, a potential intermediate. In contrast, a longitudinal study of 2,920 British girls found an inverse association between soy infant formula intake and age at menarche (2).…”
