Relational Scaffolding Enhances Children’s Understanding of Scientific Models

Abstract: Models are central to the practice and teaching of science. Yet people often fail to grasp how scientific models explain their observations of the world. Realizing the explanatory power of a model may require aligning its relational structure to that of the observable phenomena. In the present study, we tested whether relational scaffolding—guided comparisons between observable and modeled events—enhances children’s understanding of scientific models. We tested relational scaffolding during instruction of thir… Show more

“…Further, how do teachers’ beliefs, such as their self-efficacy for helping all students learn challenging mathematics, impact how they use comparison, and do curriculum and professional-development materials such as ours change teachers’ beliefs? How can we integrate insights from using comparison to promote science learning (e.g., comparing observable and modeled events; see Jee & Anggoro, 2019) with insights from mathematics learning?…”

“…Also, it is important to specify how reflection integrates modality-specific abstractions into multimodal abstractions and how awareness of abstraction processes underlies categorical predication. Learning research shows that guided and reflected upon relational processing generates abstraction in different domains (Jee & Anggoro 2019;Papageorgiou et al 2016).…”

“…Their training, however, taught these skills explicitly within the context of chemistry. Also illustrative of STEM‐situated spatial interventions is research by Jee and Anggoro (2019) who incorporated Earth‐ and space‐based perspective taking in their use of relational scaffolding during astronomy model‐based learning. They found this type of relational scaffolding was supportive of children’s learning.…”
