PurposeThe association between social media and jealousy is an aspect of the dark side of social media that has garnered significant attention in the past decade. However, the understanding of this association is fragmented and needs to be assimilated to provide scholars with an overview of the current boundaries of knowledge in this area. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to fulfill this need.Design/methodology/approachThe authors undertake an SLR to assimilate the current knowledge regarding the association between social media and jealousy, and they examine the phenomenon of social media-induced jealousy (SoMJ). Forty-five empirical studies are curated and analyzed using stringent protocols to elucidate the existing research profile and thematic research areas.FindingsThe research themes emerging from the SLR are (1) the need for a theoretical and methodological grounding of the concept, (2) the sociodemographic differences in SoMJ experiences, (3) the antecedents of SoMJ (individual, partner, rival and platform affordances) and (4) the positive and negative consequences of SoMJ. Conceptual and methodological improvements are needed to undertake a temporal and cross-cultural investigation of factors that may affect SoMJ and acceptable thresholds for social media behavior across different user cohorts. This study also identifies the need to expand current research boundaries by developing new methodologies and focusing on under-investigated variables.Originality/valueThe study may assist in the development of practical measures to raise awareness about the adverse consequences of SoMJ, such as intimate partner violence and cyberstalking.

This investigation aimed to examine the impact of Facebook (FB) intrusion on relationship satisfaction between romantic partners in Puerto Rico and how conflict and jealousy over Facebook use relate to satisfaction in this context. We developed a hypothesized research model consisting of these variables: partner Facebook intrusion, conflict over Facebook use, jealousy over Facebook use, and relationship satisfaction. We utilized data from 938 participants who completed a baseline online survey. We used the Preacher and Hayes Model 6 to test the sequential mediation prediction in our conceptual model to assess if partner Facebook intrusion has a negative indirect effect on relationship satisfaction. The results support the conclusion of sequential mediation, such that partner Facebook intrusion has an indirect effect on relationship satisfaction through conflict over Facebook use and jealousy over Facebook use. In other words, results implied a pathway where partner Facebook intrusion can cause conflict and jealousy in the couple and subsequently significantly affect the quality of the relationship. Findings and practical implications are discussed, and recommendations are offered. Public Significance StatementThe present study suggests that frequent Facebook use can cause conflict and jealousy in the couple and subsequently significantly affect the quality of the relationship. Also, this study shows that Facebook use interferes when it matters most: when the couple is pursuing quality time together. Finally, the results provide valuable information that can help design effective therapeutic interventions to prevent and reduce the harmful impact of social networks on the couple.

Los celos románticos están relacionados con la violencia de pareja, especialmente con la violencia de género. Esta emoción no se experimenta como una categoría cerrada, sino que se expresa como un conjunto de emociones. El objetivo de esta investigación es comprender las emociones vinculadas a los celos de pareja, producidos por el uso que los jóvenes hacen de Facebook. Se trató de investigación con diseño cualitativo, en la que se realizaron 270 entrevistas a jóvenes entre los 18 y 30 años de edad. Los resultados presentan que los celos se experimentan junto con el miedo, la rabia, la falta de confianza, la inseguridad, la tristeza y la desilusión. Además, se concluye que Facebook, con su propuesta de que invita a publicar la vida cotidiana, a comunicarse con desconocidos y expresar intereses y emociones por vía de códigos como los likes, alimenta los celos en las relaciones de pareja que están constituidas con un fuerte componente de control entre sus miembros.
