Relationship Between Clinical Test Results and Morphologic Severity Demonstrated by Sitting 3-D CT in Patients With Patulous Eustachian Tube

Abstract: Under resting conditions, the lengths of the closed area of the ETs in PET groups are clearly shorter than in groups without PET based on sitting position CT scans in resting condition. Among the symptoms and clinical test findings including the ET function test results, the presence of tympanic membrane movement induced by respiration, the high degree of EAC pressure change in TTAG, as well as the positive results of sonotubometry are significantly correlated with the positive findings of sitting CT revealing… Show more

“…To reflect the clinical use of the tests, openings were assigned 1 and nonopenings 0, and these were used to assess opening repeatability. Where available, the repeatability of test result values (value repeatability [e.g., sound intensity in decibels for sonotubometry]) were also assessed, as some authors have advocated that more subtle differences in test values may provide additional information on the ET function state …”

“…Where available, the repeatability of test result values (value repeatability [e.g., sound intensity in decibels for sonotubometry]) were also assessed, as some authors have advocated that more subtle differences in test values may provide additional information on the ET function state. [13][14][15] Opening and value repeatability were calculated for tests repeated within one cycle ( Fig. 1, example A) and tests repeated across the four cycles using individual test results (the first, second, and third tests were compared to the first, second, and third tests, respectively, in each of the four cycles ( Fig.…”

“…Sitting computed tomography (CT) is essential for preoperative ET evaluation by delineating the ET lumen’s shape throughout its course from the nasopharynx to the tympanic orifice (20) , (21) , (22) , (23) , (24) . The anatomy of the ET’s tympanic portion is variable and categorized into three types, namely poor peritubal cell (PTC) types ( Figure 5 : left), good PTC types with prominence ( Figure 5 : middle), and good PTC types without prominence ( Figure 5 : right) (25) .…”

“…The patient was diagnosed as PET by criteria proposed by the Japan Otological Society, as previously reported. 5 A cone beam computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bones is performed to evaluate the ET and middle ear. The height and width at the tympanic orifice, the middle portion, and the isthmus were measured.…”
