Relationship Between Delayed Reactions to Dermal Fillers and Biofilms

Abstract: Preventative measures may decrease delayed reactions and biofilm formation after injection of dermal fillers. Infection through biofilms should be considered and carefully evaluated to ensure timely treatment.

“…Biofilms may present as recurrent tender nodules occurring weeks to months after the filler injection . These delayed reactions after dermal filler treatments used to be often attributed to hypersensitivity reactions , however in recent years it has become evident that some of them may form due to bacterial aggregations . The exact mechanisms underlying their development are not yet fully understood.…”

“…A biofilm is a complex collection of microorganisms that stimulate the secretion of an extracellular protective and adhesive matrix. Biofilms create circumstances favorable for the development of a microorganism community, which gains further genetic diversity through the superficial attachment of free‐floating cells (Beer & Avelar, ). Complex interactions in the microorganism community continue with the biofilm's augmentation as cells increase in number (Narins, Coleman, & Glogau, ).…”

“…Prevention or disruption of the EPS, and small molecule signaling pathways are alternative strategies for treatment that are being explored. 2,56 Prevention of biofilm formation may be the next frontier in the management of infections related to implantable devices. As most device-associated infections are likely to originate from implant contamination at the time of implantation, prevention is paramount.…”

“…As most device-associated infections are likely to originate from implant contamination at the time of implantation, prevention is paramount. 56 Bacteria are the prime source of biofilms. Implant biofilms can be established by colonizing bacteria only at the time of initial injection (although there may be a window of time in which this may occur).…”
