Relationship Between Duration of Bottle Feeding and Occlusion in Primary Dentition

Abstract

Rchtionship b€tw€€n Duration ofBottle Feeding srd Occtusion in Primary Dentition Bottle-feeding period more than one year may influence the occlusion and will disturb th€ formation of strong muscle jaw. This effect will give an adverse result to permanent teeth. The type of malocclusion r€sulted Fom bad oral habit, may vary, depends on rhe rype of oral habit, inrensity, duration and frequency. The purpose of this study was to obs€rve the relarionship between duration ofbottle-fe€ding and occlusion of primary teeth. The following occlusion relationships examined were overbite, overjet, caninus relationshjp, and terminalplane. The design ofthis study was cross-s€ctional analytic, which was carried out in preschool children aged betwe€n 3-5 years old. The duration of bottle-feeding was categorized in 24 months,25-36 months, 37-48 months, and > 48 months. Overbite and overjet were measured fiom the cast using a digital caliper. Canjnus relationship and terminal plane were also measured tiom the cast. The result of p€arson Correlation test reveal€d a weak relationships between the period ofbortte-feeding and overbite (0,329) and overjet (r:0,3?2), whereas the result of Chi-Square lest, used to invesrigate the conelation between caninus (r:0, I I I) and terminal plane was not statistically significanr (r=0, I 70). Anova iest was carried out to observe th€ difference of overbite and overjet affecied by duration of boftle feeding. The resutt demonstrared an increase ofoverbite and overjet if durarion ofbonle,feeding was protonged. Tukey HSD test result on botrlefeeding duration and overbite shows sigrificant differences between group ofS 24 months, 25-36 months, and groups of3?-48 months, >48 months dufation. Mean while Tuk€y HSD tesr result on bottle-feeding duration ofl overjet shows significant difTerences between group of < 24 months, group 37-48 mounrhs. and > 48 mounths duration.
