Relationship between hepatitis B virus genotype B and C and response to interferon therapy in HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B patients: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: The results of the current meta-analysis indicate that HBV genotype B patients receiving interferon therapy respond better to treatment compared with genotype C patients, but this needs to be further examined.

“…However, there were small numbers of children with genotype A or D (mostly from Europe), or E (mostly from Africa). In adults, genotypes A and B have been associated with better response to interferon than genotypes C and D 1720 whereas the latter-mentioned genotypes may be associated with more severe liver disease and higher HBV DNA levels compared with those with genotype B 18 . Furthermore, there are geographic differences in genotype-phenotype associations.…”

“…The HBV genotype is associated with the treatment response to peginterferon alfa therapy. Those with HBV genotype A or B showed a more favorable HBeAg response, HBsAg response, and virological response than those with HBV genotype C or D [108,220,251,252].…”

“…100 In this study, HBsAg decline during treatment varied significantly according to HBV genotype (A and B more than C and D; p <0.001). In a meta-analysis of 15 studies, patients with genotype B infections had a better response to IFN than patients with genotype C. 101 These papers provided evidence for a more personalised approach for treatment of HBV with PEG-IFN, based on HBV genotype and HBsAg quantification.…”
