Relationship between hypothyroidism and periodontitis: A scoping review

Abstract: Aim The objective of this study was to assess the existing literature to determine if a relationship exists between hypothyroidism and periodontitis. Methods We used a modified approach to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses by searching five databases in addition to the gray literature. Keywords in the title and abstract fields, as well as subject headings for both periodontal disease and hypothyroidism, were used to search the existing literature for publications relevant t… Show more

“…Since the endocrine system can modulate the immune system in a bidirectional manner [52] and, in a recent scoping review, on 29 selected articles, a positive relationship between hypothyroidism and periodontitis was found [53], thus the findings of the present study are totally unexpected. One possible explanation is that periodontitis patients are actually suffering subclinical hypothyroidism and/or they have not yet been properly diagnosed [54], and, this were true, the surveillance of hypothyroid hormone function can be further supported in DS individuals.…”

“…Instead, this has been due to the ability to escalate beds and surgical capacity. 4 The main increases in capacity have been the independent sector and the creation of cancer hubs. Some regions have more private hospitals, so finding additional operative capacity is relatively easier.…”

“…It has been reported that a reduction in serum levels of thyroid hormones, as clinically present in HT, increases the bone loss related to periodontal inflammation in animal model [ 5 ]. Meanwhile, a clinical relationship between PD and HT appears reasonable and is supported by the literature, although the body of evidence is still weak [ 6 ]. This is supported by several findings in recent literature; on the one hand, periodontal therapy was found to positively influence the thyroid status, whereby Interleukin 6 and TNF alpha were revealed as potential key players [ 7 ].…”
