Relationship between inner dialog and ideas of reference and the mediating role of dissociation

Abstract: Recent lines of research have begun to concentrate on internal dialogue and its relationship to a diversity of psychopathological phenomena present in psychotic disorders. This study was intended as a preliminary exploration of the relationship of internal dialogue, dissociation and ideas of reference. To do this, a sample of 318 students filled in an internal dialogue scale (the VISQ, McCarthy-Jones & Fernyhough), one for dissociation (DES-II, Carlson & Putnam) and another for ideas of reference (REF, Lenzenw… Show more

“…It would be of interest to find out whether some of the variables studied with regard to psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations, also influence ideas of reference. In a previous study, it was found that the relationship between inner speech and ideas of reference was mediated by dissociation (Bellido‐Zanin et al ., ). These authors found similar processes associated with hallucinations and ideas of reference.…”

“…Thus Varese, Barkus and Bentall () and Perona‐Garcelán, Carrascoso‐López, García‐Montes et al . (), for example, found that dissociation mediated positively between childhood traumas and hallucinations in psychotic patients, and Bellido‐Zanin, Perona‐Garcelán, Senín‐Calderón, López‐Jiménez & Rodríguez‐Testal () found a positive association between dissociation and ideas of reference in a population with no psychiatric pathology.…”

“…Closely related concepts of thought styles have also been associated with dissociation. For example, dissociation partially mediated the relation between inner speech and self-referential ideas (Bellido-Zanin et al, 2016); such inner speech characterizes rumination, which is related to verbal processes inherent in internal dialog (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2004). In addition, an experience-sampling study conducted on a single clinical case (Poerio et al, 2016) found that repetitive and negative daydreaming by the client predicted increased dissociation.…”

“…It can be defined as the subjective experience of language in the absence of overt and audible articulation and is a basic component of self-awareness [66]. As pointed out by Vygotsky (1987) [76], this particular type of talking to oneself has an obvious dialogical quality and, according to this author, inner speech represents the final point in an evolutionary process in which external discourse gradually becomes internalized as a form of verbal thought [77].…”
