Water quality is highly dependent on the landscape characteristics. In this study, we investigated the relationships between water quality and landscape pattern (composition and configuration) in Huzhou City, China. The water quality variables, including pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (CODMn), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), NH3-N, petroleum, dissolved total phosphorus (DTP), and total nitrogen (TN) in low water, normal water and flood periods were identified by investigating 34 sampling sites in Huzhou City during the period from 2001 to 2007. Landscape composition and landscape configuration metrics were calculated for different scales. It was found that scales and seasons both play important role when analyzing the relationships between landscape characteristics of different land use types. The results implied that some water quality parameters such as CODMn, petroleum are more polluted in flood period than the other two seasons at different scales, while DTP and TN are more polluted in low water period. Influences of different landscape metrics on water quality should operate at different spatial scales. The results shown in this paper will effectively provide scientific basis for the policy making in sustainable development of water environment.

Changes in the environment, aiming at agricultural intensification, progressive urbanisation and other forms of anthropopression, may cause an increase in soil erosion and a resulting increase in the pollution inflow to surface water. At the same time, this results in increased nutrient pollution of bottom sediments. In this study, the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe) and potassium (K) were analysed using bottom sediment samples collected at 39 sites located along the entire length of the Warta River and its tributaries. Agricultural use of land adjacent to rivers was found to significantly degrade sediment quality, while anthropogenic land use (as defined by Corine Land Cover classification—CLC), unlike previous studies, reduces the pollution loads in the bottom sediments. Forest use also contributes to the reduction of the pollution load in sediments. It was found that the significance of the relationship between pollutant concentrations and land use depends on the length of the river–land interface. According to the analyses, the level of correlation between the analysed constituents depends on the use of land adjacent to rivers. The impact of agricultural land use has the strongest effect in the 1 km zone and 5 km in the case of anthropogenic land use. The results showed that the variability of total phosphorus TP concentrations is strongly correlated with the variability of iron concentrations. SPI values indicate that the risk to sediment quality is low due to TOC and Fe concentrations. In contrast, the risk of sediment pollution by TN and TP shows greater differentiation. Although the risk is negligible for 40% of the samples, at the same time, for 33% of the samples, a very high risk of pollution with both TN and TP was found.

Topographic and hydro-climatic features of South Korea are highly heterogeneous and able to influence the drought phenomena in the region. The complex topographical and hydro-climatic features of South Korea need a statistically accurate method to find homogeneous regions. Regionalization of drought in a bivariate framework has scarcely been applied in South Korea before. Hierarchical Classification on Principal Components (HCPC) algorithm together with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method and cluster validation indices were investigated and used for the regionalization of drought across the South Korean region. Statistical homogeneity and discordancy of the region was tested on univariate and bivariate frameworks. HCPC indicate that South Korea should be divided into four regions which are closer to being homogeneous. Univariate and bivariate homogeneity and discordancy tests showed the significant difference in their results due to the inability of univariate homogeneity and discordancy measures to consider the joint behavior of duration and severity. Regionalization of drought for SPI time scale of 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months showed significant variation in discordancy and homogeneity of the region with the change in SPI time scale. The results of this study can be used as basic data required to establish a drought mitigation plan on regional scales.
