Relationship between Lignin Content and the Durability of Wood Pellets Fabricated Using Larix kaempferi C. Sawdust

Abstract: This work was conducted to examine the relationship between lignin content and the durability of larch (LAR) pellets. LAR sawdust was immersed in tap water (TW), sulfuric acid (AC) and sodium hydroxide (AK) solutions, and then the immersed sawdust was used for pellet fabrication. Klason lignin (KL) content of the immersed LAR, contents of soluble lignin (SL) and monomeric sugars liberated from the immersion of LAR, and durability of LAR pellets were measured. KL content decreased as the concentration of AC and… Show more

“…In this study, using a concentration of 5% NaOH solution effectively improved the mechanical properties of Betung bamboo internode. According to Yang et al [16], the concentration of the solution affects the alkali treatment. The greater the concentration, the more it affects the lignocellulosic content of the material.…”

“…NaOH solution could cause the delignification process of lignocellulosic material (Xu et al 2020). Several studies reported that alkaline treatment decrease lignin content, especially at high concentration (Maulana et al 2021a;Yang et al 2019). Another study found a similar outcome reported by Tong et al (2018) that alkaline immersion treatment with 10% NaOH for 24 h partially removed the lignin content.…”

“…Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biomass comprising 15%-30% of the total aromatic biomass, whereas cellulose is the primary material in woody biomass, accounting for 30%-50% of the total (Kim et al, 2019;Upton and Kasko, 2015;Yang et al, 2017). As the most abundant aromatic compound in the world, lignin has excellent potential as a raw material in various industrial applications such as the manufacture of engineering plastics, foam materials, membranes, nanofibers, hydrogels, adhesives, and other new materials (Bang et al, 2022;Fatriasari et al, 2020;Hwang and Choi, 2018;Hwang et al, 2021;Lee et al, 2019Lee et al, , 2021 Effects of Precipitation pH of Black Liquor on Characteristics of Precipitated and Acetone-Fractionated Kraft Lignin Min and Um, 2017;Yang et al, 2019). Among various technical lignins, kraft lignin (KL) extracted from black liquor in the kraft pulping process is the most abundant industrial lignin (Gadhave et al, 2019;Li et al, 2016;Tejado et al, 2007).…”
