Relationship between oil tocopherol concentration and oil weight per grain in several crop species

Abstract: The objectives of this work were (i) to analyse the effect of intercepted solar radiation (ISR) per plant during grain filling on oil tocopherol concentration in soybean, maize and rape and (ii) to investigate in these species if variations in oil tocopherol concentration are well accounted for by variations in oil weight per grain. Field experiments were conducted with genotypes of soybean, maize and rape. A genotype of sunflower was included as ‘control species’ as its behaviour was known from previous works… Show more

“…This was probably due to variation in organic solvents used in crude fat analysis. Besides, the lipid content can be affected by genetic and environmental factors (Izquierdo et al 2012). Roselle seed is an excellent source of culinary oil (Nyam et al 2009).…”

“…Concerning the effect of solar radiation, in “Nonpareil” almond kernels the concentration of α-tocopherol was increased after a mild solar UV radiation supplement using the white weed mat, which may have altered metabolic pathways and stimulated α-tocopherol accumulation in almond lipids [ 44 ]. In sunflower, it has been reported that an increase in intercepted solar radiation per plant increased the amount of tocopherol per grain [ 65 ].…”

“…A dilution relationship was also observed for oil tocopherol concentration in sunflower (González Belo et al, ; Nolasco et al, ) and other oilseed species, such as soybean and canola (Izquierdo et al, ). According to the adjusted equation in this work, considering all data points (Fig.…”

“…Previous studies have shown the influence of radiation on grain quality traits in sunflower. An increase in intercepted radiation during grain filling increased the amount of tocopherols and oil in sunflower grains (Izquierdo et al, ). As the oil increased more than tocopherols, these compounds had a lower concentration in the oil (González Belo et al, ).…”
