Relationship between Oral Assessment Guide score and hypoalbuminemia in newly hospitalized patients

Abstract: This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) scores and malnutrition in newly hospitalized patients. A total of 880 hospitalized adults were enrolled. Hypoalbuminemia was defined as serum albumin less than 3.5 g/dL. Patients with hypoalbuminemia were older (P < 0.001), had a higher prevalence of respiratory diseases (P < 0.01), a higher prevalence of digestive diseases (P < 0.01), a lower prevalence of oral feeding (P < 0.001), a lower body mass index (P < 0.001)… Show more

“…To assess Hb and ALB levels at the time of admission and 6 months after release, fasting venous blood was taken early in the morning and serum was extracted by centrifugation at 3500 r/min for 10 minutes. Patients were considered anemic when Hb was less than 120 g/L and hypoproteinemic when ALB was less than 35 g/L [ 11 ].…”

“…Hypoalbuminaemia is also associated with poor oral health in hospitalised patients ( Ohshima et al, 2020 ). Additionally, geriatric chewing skills and anthropometric measures are associated with serum albumin levels ( Okada et al, 2010 ).…”
