Relationship between room shape and acoustics of rectangular concert halls

Abstract: Extensive acoustics computer simulations have been made using Odeon computer simulation software. In 24 rectangular rooms representing "shoe-box" type concert halls with volumes of 8 000 m3, 12 000 m3 and 16 000 m3 from 300 to 850 measurements positions have been analysed. Only room averaged objective measures are considered here, in particular Clarity (C80), Strength (G) and Early Lateral Energy Fraction (LF80). Results from simulations have been compared with regression models created based on real hall meas… Show more

“…The different presets for the active acoustics system distribute the energy to different parts of the room, while maintaining consistent characteristics in terms of reverberation time, loudness and geometric shape. Simulations for rectangular room with varying properties reveal, that in particular the geometric shape has a huge impact on the lateral energy 16 . Compared to the actively untreated room, the acoustic room volume was extended by factor 2, thereby changing the lateral energy.…”

“…Width was also negatively correlated with reverberation time. A more recent study used acoustic simulations and generated various hypothetical design models to analyse the association between floor-plate shape and acoustic characteristics of shoebox-shaped concert halls (Klosak and Gade 2008). In total, 24 hypothetical models were generated.…”
