Relationship between scrotal circumference and semen parameters in crossbred bulls

Abstract: The relationship between the scrotal circumference and semen volume, sperm concentration and number of sperm per ejaculate of 12 crossbred bulls [4 Local × Friesian, 4 Local × Sahiwal] was studied. Semen of three consecutive collections at seven day intervals was evaluated. The age of bulls at first collection varied between 15 and 20 months. Soon after collection, volume, sperm concentration, number of spermatozoa per ejaculate and initial sperm motility of fresh semen were measured. Scrotal circumference was… Show more

“…Baloch et al (2019) recorded 7.10 ml semen volume in Holstein Friesian which is slightly higher than this study. On the other hand, present findings on the semen volume of Sahiwal breeding bulls strongly support the previous research works (Mostari et al, 2004;Latif et al, 2009). The variation in the ejaculate volume might be attributed to the genetic potentiality of the breeding bulls; scrotal circumference, body size and body weight the secretary activities of the sex glands (Leon et al, 1991;Hafez, 1993).…”

“…Scrotal circumference is an easy trait to measure and has moderate to the high magnitude of heritability estimates (Gressler et al, 2000;Fridrich et al, 2005;Eler et al, 2006;Boligon et al, 2010b). Thus, scrotal circumference presents favorable genetic correlations between semen quantity and quality (Latif et al, 2009), age at puberty in females (Santana et al, 2015), and ponderal development (Ortiz Peña et al, 2001;Brito et al, 2003).…”

“…A favorable phenotypic association of SC with semen quality has also been demonstrated in different studies (Kealey et al, 2006;Latif et al, 2009;Waldner et al, 2010). However, the main role of SC refers to its favorable genetic correlation with sexual precocity of females, which is very important for Bos indicus that commonly present late puberty in compar-ison with Bos taurus (Eler et al, 2004(Eler et al, , 2006Meirelles et al, 2009).…”
