Relationship Between the Atterberg Limits and Clay Content

Abstract: This study investigates the liquid limit (Casagrande's method) and plastic limit (rolling and thread method) of six inorganic soils and their respective mixtures withˆne silica sand. It was observed that the liquid limit and plastic limit values of the mixtures tested, except those with a low clay percentage, are linked to the respective clay size contents by a linear relationship. The Atterberg limits were subsequently recalculated using the equations of the regression lines of the mixtures governed by linear… Show more

“…This also shows that, in the weathering profiles, the soil Atterberg limits increased with the increase in clay content, which is also reported by several other studies (Polidori, 2007;Baskan et al, 2009;Keller and Dexter, 2012). This result may be due to the effect of clay on soil plasticity in changing the arrangement of soil particles and cation exchange capacity.…”

“…In particular, it has been observed (Polidori, 2007(Polidori, , 2009) that the W L and CF of the tested soil were found to be the best parameters to appraise soil properties (index and intrinsic mechanical parameters, such as the residual shear friction angle).…”
