Relationship Between the Elevated Muscle FDG Uptake in the Distal Upper Extremities on PET/CT Scan and Prescan Utilization of Mobile Devices in Young Patients

Abstract: Increased FDG uptake in the muscles of the DUEs in young patients is commonly seen in those who used mobile devices prior to PET/CT study. Recommendation should be considered to reduce using mobile devices prior to FDG PET/CT study in young patient population.

“… In pediatric patients all the above rules, according to pathology, should be followed. Limiting the use of mobile devices for playing is important [ 269 ]. [ 18 F]FDG activity should be calculated according to the EANM pediatric dosage card [ 270 ].…”

“…A follow-up PET/CT 1 year after stem cell transplantation was performed to evaluate the therapy response. The images did not show any abnormal 18 F-FDG accumulation in skeletal muscle, suggesting complete resolution. CAEBV infection is a severe disease with high morbidity and mortality.…”

“…18 F-FDG PET/CT was performed to guide the lymph node biopsy and help differential diagnosis, 1 which did not show abnormal activity in the lymph nodes, liver, or spleen. Unexpectedly, heterogeneously 18 F-FDG uptake associated with mild swelling in multiple skeletal muscle groups was noted, especially in the right upper arm (small arrows in A-D; A: MIP; B: PET; C: CT; D: fusion), the right thigh (middle arrows in A, E, F, and G), the left thigh (large arrows in A, H, I, and J), and the right foot (dotted arrows in A, K, L, and M). In order to determine the stage of the CAEBV infection, 2,3 a left cervical lymph node biopsy was performed.…”

“…Consequently, the submental activity was interpreted as genioglossus muscle activity due to sucking on a pacifier. Elevated FDG activity in the major muscles due to exertion is well-described [6][7][8][9][10] and rarely causes diagnostic dilemma. However, focal genioglossus muscle activity due to sucking in toddlers was much less recognized.…”
