Relationship Between the Productivity Losses of Tilapia and Aeromonas veronii Infection

Abstract: Nile tilapia (Oreochormis niloticus) is considered one of the top cultured fish in Egypt and the second globally. The high demand for animal protein was associated with intensive fish culturing, which resulted in the emergence of disease outbreaks causing significant losses in tilapia aquaculture among the recent years. With special reference to bacterial outbreaks, Aeromonas veronii (A. veronii) is a recently reported bacterial pathogen affecting farmed tilapia and other fish species worldwide. A. veronii has… Show more

“…The infection has been previously reported in many cultured freshwater fish species, including Carassius auratus, Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Silurus asotus (Li et al, 2020), Oreochromis niloticus (Reda et al, 2022), carp (Ran et al, 2018), Leiocassis longirostris (Cai et al, 2012), Astronotus ocellatus, Carassius Carassius (Sreedharan et al, 2013) and Lateolabrax maculatus (Wang et al, 2021). Meanwhile, A. veronii infection is less abundant in cultured marine fishes as it was reported only from diseased European seabass (Smyrli et al, 2019;Tanrıkul & Dincturk, 2021).…”

“…The increased prevalence obtained from the earthen ponds when compared to concrete and plastic tanks may be due to the increased abundance of bacteria associated with the increased trophic state of earthen ponds. This association tends to be stronger in finer textured sediment which is strongly influenced by the type and quantity of clay minerals and organic matter present promoting the increase and persistence of the bacteria in the environment as seen in earthen ponds but which differs in both concrete and plastic tanks (Hassard et al, 2016;Luo, et al, 2019) One of the most significant constraints on fish productivity is outbreaks of Aeromonas disease on the fish farms (Nhinh et al, 2021;Reda et al, 2021) and knowledge about the prevalent Aeromonas species is needed for management and prevention of diseases on the farm. In this present study, the overall prevalence of Aeromonas species recorded from C. gariepinus reared in the different culture facilities in the study area was 29.86%, this is however higher than the prevalence of 19.6% reported by Adah et al .…”
