Sexual minorities are people with non-cis and non-heterosexual gender identities, including LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) identities. Korean society is prejudiced against sexual minorities—in our study, we will broadly label this prejudice homophobia. It is possible that sexual minorities do not receive appropriate health management owing to such prejudices. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce homophobia in nursing students. This study aims to measure the degree of homophobia in Korean nursing students and identify the factors that affect homophobia. Our study is a cross-sectional study, which surveys attitudes of 265 nursing students toward homophobia in five Korean cities in January to March, 2019. The average homophobia score was 74.5 out of a possible 120; 92.9% of the participants were classified as homophobic, and 42.3% as highly homophobic. We found that participants who were male, religious, had low self-esteem, and had no family members or acquaintances who might belong to a sexual minority group, were more likely to be homophobic. Nursing students in Korea still exhibit high levels of homophobia. As high levels of homophobia can negatively affect health management and nursing, especially in the case of sexual minorities, we suggest that educational programs should be set up to reduce homophobia in nursing students.

Objetivo: evaluar la asociación entre compromiso religioso y presentar actitudes negativas hacia hombres homosexuales, en un grupo de estudiantes de medicina peruanos. Materiales y métodos: estudio transversal analítico realizado en estudiantes que asistieron a una asamblea estudiantil de la International Federation of Medical Students Associations en Perú. La presencia de actitudes negativas hacia hombres homosexuales se evaluó usando una dimensión de la AttitudesToward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale. El compromiso religioso se evaluó con la pregunta: ¿te consideras una persona religiosa? Los factores asociadosa presentar actitudes negativas hacia hombres homosexuales fueron evaluados usando razones de prevalencia (RP) y sus intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC 95%) calculados con regresiones de Poisson con varianza robusta. Resultados: se analizaron datos de 117 participantes (62,4% fueron mujeres, edad promedio: 20,9 ± 1,6 años). Se encontró una asociación entre el compromiso religioso y presentar actitudes negativas hacia hombres homosexuales (RP: 1,89; IC 95%: 1,07-3,37). Otros factores asociados fueron ser mujer (RP: 0,60; IC 95%: 0,38-0,95) y tener algún amigo o familiar homosexual (RP: 0,38; IC 95%: 0,24-0,61). Conclusión: en la población estudiantil analizadad, el compromiso religioso se asoció con la presencia de actitudes negativas hacia hombres homosexuales. Esto sugiere la necesidad de realizar intervenciones que concilien actitudes positivas frente a la homosexualidad con la religiosidad en estudiantes de medicina.

The purpose of this article is to explore experiences of discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) individuals in three domains of social policies: employment, housing and health care — domains in which LGBT individuals are not openly recognized as equal citizens and anti‐discrimination legislation is absent in Turkey. Drawing on qualitative content analysis of the data collected from 14 focus group interviews with 139 LGBT individuals conducted in ten provinces of Turkey in the first half of 2014, this article sheds light on diverse forms of discrimination facing LGBT individuals in employment, housing and health care in a largely under‐researched country. The article concludes that the contemporary understanding of Turkish citizenship and its practice are rooted in heterosexist universalism that does not recognize LGBTs as equal citizens, which, in turn, leads to systematic breaches of LGBTs' social rights in employment, housing and health care. The article shows that even strong and universalistic social policies fail to serve LGBTs on an equal footing with other citizens unless equal citizenship rights of LGBTs and anti‐discrimination principles are recognized and realized.
