Abstract. As the most severe ecological issue in southwest China, karst rocky desertification (KRD) has both threatened and constrained regional sustainable development. Comprehensively understanding the relationship between the evolution of KRD and relevant driving data would provide more information to combat KRD in such complex karst environments. Past studies have been limited in quantifying the relative importance of driving factors influencing fine-scale KRD evolution, and have also lacked insight into their interactive impacts. To address these issues, we have used geographical information system techniques and a geographical detector model to explore the spatial consistency of driving factors and their interactions in relation to the evolution of KRD. Changshun County in China was selected as a representative area for the study. Nine relevant driving factors, including both natural and anthropogenic factors, were studied in regard to their relationships with KRD transformation between 2000 and 2010. Our results demonstrate the relative importance of driving data in influencing the improvement and deterioration of KRD. Lithology, soil type and road influence are identified as the leading factors. Interestingly, to our study at least, there is no significant difference between the impacts of natural and anthropogenic factors influencing KRD improvement, and even natural factors have a higher impact on KRD deterioration. Factors were found to enhance the influence of each other for KRD transformation. In particular, the results show a non-linearly enhanced effect between driving factors, which significantly aggravates KRD. New information found in our study helps to effectively control and restore areas afflicted by KRD.

Drought is the main limiting factor for plant growth in karst areas with a fragile ecological environment. Cinnamomum migao H.W. Li is an endemic medicinal woody plant present in the karst areas of southwestern China, and it is endangered due to poor drought tolerance. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to enhance the drought tolerance of plants. However, few studies have examined the contribution of AMF in improving the drought tolerance of C. migao seedlings. Therefore, we conducted a series of experiments to determine whether a single inoculation and coinoculation of AMF (Claroideoglomus lamellosum and Claroideoglomus etunicatum) enhanced the drought tolerance of C. migao. Furthermore, we compared the effects of single inoculation and coinoculation with different inoculum sizes (20, 40, 60, and 100 g; four replicates per treatment) on mycorrhizal colonization rate, plant growth, photosynthetic parameters, antioxidant enzyme activity, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and osmoregulatory substance contents. The results showed that compared with nonmycorrhizal plants, AMF colonization significantly improved plant growing status; net photosynthetic rate; superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase activities; and soluble sugar, soluble protein, and proline contents. Furthermore, AMF colonization increased relative water content and reduced MDA content in cells. These combined cumulative effects of AMF symbiosis ultimately enhanced the drought tolerance of seedlings and were closely related to the inoculum size. With an increase in inoculum size, the growth rate and drought tolerance of plants first increased and then decreased. The damage caused by drought stress could be reduced by inoculating 40–60 g of AMF, and the effect of coinoculation was significantly better than that of single inoculation at 60 g of AMF, while the effect was opposite at 40 g of AMF. Additionally, the interaction between AMF and inoculum sizes had a significant effect on drought tolerance. In conclusion, the inoculation of the AMF (Cl. lamellosum and Cl. etunicatum) improved photosynthesis, activated antioxidant enzymes, regulated cell osmotic state, and enhanced the drought tolerance of C. migao, enabling its growth in fragile ecological environments.

Karst rocky desertification (KRD) is a serious ecological and environmental issue threatening southwestern China. The evolution of KRD calls for predicting its potential expansion or contraction, to support policy‐making for combating KRD. A spatial model named ‘SDKRD’ for simulating KRD dynamics was developed in this study. The novelty of it is the ability to explore spatially local KRD evolution and integrate this information into a global estimation. The SDKRD model consists of three modules: a global KRD forecast and scenario setting, a local exploration of spatially varying effects of driving forces and neighbourhood influence on KRD evolution, and an iteration module for combining results of aforementioned modules. The SDKRD model was tested in the Changshun County as a case‐study. The accuracy assessment confirmed a spatially visual consistency and a robust statistical result. Spatial KRD maps from 2010 to 2030 were simulated under three scenarios. The historical extrapolation scenario found a spatially global KRD reversion and locally scattered KRD deterioration. Different KRD restoration strategies under the other two scenarios could reverse the transformation of KRD classes at different magnitudes. Intermediate classes in the KRD evolution process could be more easily reversed. Under three scenarios with the increased strength of KRD management measures, areas of no KRD increased by 8.7%, 13.5%, and 16.6%, and areas of moderate KRD decreased by 38.3%, 53.0%, and 53.9%, respectively. SDKRD model presents specific KRD evolution trajectories and visualizes the KRD transformation at each location, which can help find cost‐effective ways of combating KRD with differentiated strategies.
