Relative efficiency of square mesh codends in an artisanal

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The relative efficiency of two square-mesh codend designs with the same circumference (~2 m) but different mesh sizes and materials (32 mm polyethylene-PE and 30 mm polyamide-PA) was tested in an artisanal shrimp trawl fishery in Paraná, southern Brazil. The two square-mesh codends were hauled alternately with a 26 mm diamond-shaped mesh codend (control) in a twin gear configuration. Although not significant, the mean numbers of total bycatch were reduced by 16.6 and 10.0% with the 32 and 30 mm squar… Show more

“…Different codend constructions with square meshes have been shown to have good selective properties for finfish and are applied in many fisheries [17, 18]. These types of construction are not widespread in shrimp fisheries, but several studies have successfully applied square mesh panels/codends in shrimp trawl fisheries [19, 20, 21]. Therefore, testing codend constructions that incorporate square mesh size selectivity and comparing them to the 35-mm diamond mesh codends used by the fleet today is relevant.…”

“…These activities are mainly performed through double rig bottom trawl nets, a common fishing practice in this area, where an interaction with different species is recognized. Some of these species are commercially used by the fleet and some others are discarded (Haimovici & Mendonça, 1996;Andriguetto-Filho et al, 2009;Silva et al, 2012).…”
