Release of Potentially Toxic Elements From Industrial Sludge: Implications for Land Disposal

Abstract: In recent years, rapid industrial development has led to an increase in various types of industrial waste generation in Vietnam. Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) can contaminate water resources when waste is not properly treated and/or stored in confined disposal facilities. This study characterizes the occurrence and leaching behavior of PTEs from industrial sludge under the influence of oxidation and pH with implications for open dump disposal. Environmental issues related to possible management options are… Show more

“…12(b) is explained as follows: The UV-Vis light excites electrons, which are hindered from recombination. The electrons react with molecular oxygen to produce superoxide radical anions (1), hydroxyl radicals are generated by hole trapping activity of hydroxyl group (2), and hydroxyl radicals oxidize the MO in water to form CO 2 and H 2 O (3). The photodegradation efficiency varies in the order T-ox-CdS-10 < TiO 2 < T-ox-CdS-40 < CdS < T-ox-CdS-20.…”

“…The conventional way of acquiring electrical energy requires the burning of fossil fuel, which releases greenhouse gases to the environment such as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) causing unwanted phenomenon like global warming [1]. In addition, carcinogenic and toxic waste not properly managed by some industries is released directly or indirectly to the water bodies consumed by the people [2]. The major research challenges nowadays involve the purification of contaminated water and efficient utilization of environmental-friendly solar energy for the generation of electrical energy.…”
