Reliability and Concurrent Validity of the Adapted Chinese Version of Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) Questionnaire

Abstract: Both cultural adaptation and linguistic translation are essential in any attempt to use a HRQL questionnaire across cultures. The Chinese version of the SRS-22 outcome instrument has satisfactory internal consistency and excellent reproducibility. It is ready for use in clinical studies on idiopathic scoliosis in Chinese-speaking societies.

“…The domains that illustrated these correlations were functions, varying from moderate to excellent, and pain, varying from good to excellent. Similar results were found in other studies, such as by Asher et al 18 , Cheung et al 20 , Alanay et al 30 and Hashimoto et al 31 . However, the mental health domain showed the lowest correlation values with their correspondent domains in the Br-SF-36 (social functions).…”

“…This relatively low levels of correlations also occurred in the satisfaction with the treatment domains, which did not have a correspondent domain in the Br-SF-36. This indicated a poor intrinsic association between the domains 20,30 .…”

“…Significative percentage of the sample showing a ceiling effect in the Pain domain can be explained by the absence of pain in idiopathic scoliosis during adolescence and early adulthood. The high ceiling effect in the Treatment Satisfaction domain may reflect patients' confidence in the recruitment hospital, where most patients in this study are treated 9,32,34 . However, unlike the original version, the Brazilian questionnaire was not administered by the operating orthopedic surgeon, but rather by three physical therapy students who were not involved with patients' treatment.…”

“…It has been properly validated in both adolescents [2,4] and adults [10], and adaptations in several languages are now available [1,6,12,13,19,22]. To determine the validity of the SRS-22, the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, factorial analysis, floor and ceiling effects, and convergentdiscriminant validity have been tested [4,10,14].…”
