Reliability and Remaining Life Assessment of an Electronic Fuze Using Accelerated Life Testing

Abstract: An electronic fuze is a one-shot system that has a long storage life and high mission criticality. Fuzes are designed, developed, and tested for high reliability (over 99%) with a confidence level of more than 95%. The electronic circuit of a fuze is embedded in the fuze assembly, and thus is not visible. Go/NoGo fuze assembly mission critical testing does not provide prognostic information about electrical and electronic circuits and subtle causes of failure. Longer storage times and harsh conditions cause de… Show more

“…To determine the size of the experiment, we took into account the operational conditions of the devices. We estimate the number of independent runs in our study for each test using the central limit theorem from the approach described in [37] and more recently in [38]. Specifically, we need to highlight some specific definitions:…”

“…Safety has always been the primary issue of weapons systems [1,2]. Fuzes as a key element in the chain of action of a weapon system to achieve effective damage to a target, despite the adoption of multiple security measures, its safety problems still occur.…”

“…However, many of them could be considered limited, in terms of their applicability, since they are usually based on laboratory experimental data, mainly related to electronic and/or electrical components physical failures (see refs. [1][2][3][4] ). These factors are rarely the cause for a technological product to be returned, due to field failures.…”

“…Statistical literature is plenty of different methods for predicting the failure probability of a product. However, many of them could be considered limited, in terms of their applicability, since they are usually based on laboratory experimental data, mainly related to electronic and/or electrical components physical failures (see refs 1–4 …”
