Reliability and Validity of a Culturally Appropriate Food Frequency Questionnaire to Measure Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intakes in Midwestern African American Women of Childbearing Age

Abstract: Omega-3 fatty acid intakes may play an important role in maternal health outcomes and infant brain and neural development. Research has shown that pregnant African American women have intakes below recommended levels for optimal health. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of a culturally specific food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to measure total omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake of Midwestern Africa… Show more

“…Cronbach’s alpha assesses the variability between the individual nutrient intakes relative to the total variability of intakes. A high coefficient alpha means the tool used is reliable [36]. Cronbach’s alpha value demonstrated good agreement between FFQ1 and FFQ2, as the value is between 0.70 and 0.80 [37].…”

“…The outcome is unsurprising given than repeat administrations of the FFQ2 were only 1 month apart from FFQ1 [25]. A Cronbach's alpha more than 0.70 indicates the FFQ is reliable [30]. Cronbach's alpha in the present study demonstrated excellent agreement between FFQ1 and FFQ2.…”

“…Further, administration of these surveys requires trained personnel, an activity severely restricted by the current staff shortage and the expense involved in researcher education (van Velthoven et al, 2013). These factors have resulted in the inability to integrate and compare dietary data between populations (Detours, Dumont, Bersini, & Maenhaut, 2003;Dwarkanath et al, 2014;Higginbottom et al, 2011;Scales, Krogstrand, Albrecht, & Eskridge, 2013;van Velthoven et al, 2013), a necessity in the cross-validation of datasets derived from biologically diverse cohorts (Detours et al, 2003).…”
