Reliability and validity of inexpensive and easily administered anthropometric clinical evaluation methods of postural asymmetry measurement in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a systematic review

Abstract: Overall, strong levels of evidence exist for iPhone and scoliometer measurements, with a high to very high reliability and moderate to very high validity. Moderate levels of evidence exist for scoliometer with mathematical formula and clinical examination with moderate and low validity, respectively. Limited evidence exists for aesthetic tools TRACE and AI and 2D photography. These results indicate there are accurate and reproducible anthropometric measures that are inexpensive and applicable in therapy settin… Show more

“…TRACE is an inexpensive, accurate and reproducible tool for aesthetic evaluation and may be also applied in therapy settings to assess postural asymmetry. However, the limitation is that TRACE does not allow to asses 3D parameters which are characteristics of AIS [ 430 ].…”

“…In addition, Prowse et al conducted a systematic review of the reliability and validity of inexpensive and easy clinical evaluation methods of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The scoliometer method with a one-parameter mathematical formula [ 10 , 11 ] showed moderate to strong levels of evidence [ 12 ].…”

“…In 2015, Prowse et al performed a systematic analysis of the accurate and reproducible methods to predict scoliotic curvature. Moderate evidence existed for the use of a scoliometer with a mathematical formula [ 12 ], but the data are still limited.…”

“…However, research questions in those studies did not cover assessment methods based on mobile applications. Other reviews have also been performed but with a focus on anthropometric measures [16] or on applications available in application stores [17], which are not tested and validated experimentally with results presented in the research articles.…”
