Reliability and Validity of the Greek Version of the STAIC

Abstract: Summary: This study describes the adaptation of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC; Spielberger, Edwards, Lushene, Montuori, & Platzek, 1973 ) to the Greek population. It was hypothesized that the STAIC would be able to measure children's state-trait anxiety levels. In the initial phase, a sample of 100 children, aged 9-12 years, was used in order to shape the final form of the inventory. In the final phase, two different samples (N = 875), aged 9-12 years, were used to test the validity… Show more

“…During this first interview, the adolescent completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Questionnaire for children, which has been validated for the Greek population, consisting of two scales: The A-State Anxiety Scale and the A-Trait Anxiety Scale [ 24 ]. The A-State Anxiety Scale consists of 20 questions and is designed to measure the subjective feelings of nervousness, fear, and anxiety, with variable intensity, fluctuating depending on the situation [ 24 ]. The A-Trait Scale [ 24 ] consists of 20 questions and measures individual differences in the way children experience stress in their daily lives.…”

“…Further parameters assessed included stress (using the state compound of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, STAI) (Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushene, 1970), depression scale (Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, CES-D) (Radloff, 1977) and quality of life (short-form World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire, WHOQOL-BREF) (W.H.O., 1996), with all questionnaires having previously been translated and validated in the Greek language (Fountoulakis et al, 2001;Ginieri-Coccossis et al, 2012;Psychountaki, Zervas, Karteroliotis, & Spielberger, 2003). Blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate (PR) were recorded twice with a two-minute interval, and the mean of the two values was calculated.…”

“…The STAIC is used to assess anxiety in children. It was modified from the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) used for adults by Spielberger in 1973 [7,14]. The Turkish version of the STAIC was improved by Özusta in 1995 [15].…”
