Reliability and Validity of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire in Vietnam

Abstract: Background:The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) was developed as an improvement of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) for use in cross-cultural settings. This study compared the reliability and validity of GPAQ and IPAQ in Vietnam.Methods:251 adults were randomly selected from a population-based survey (n = 1978) of noncommunicable disease risk factors. GPAQ and IPAQ were administered on 2 occasions. Participants wore pedometers and logged their physical activity (PA) for 7 c… Show more

“…Our results are comparable to other studies where low-to-moderate validity (rho: 0.20–0.48) was demonstrated against objective measures [ 6 , 27 33 ]. Additionally, in the 12 countries study validation of the short International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the pooled validity correlations against accelerometers was found to be 0.30 (95% CI 0.23–0.36) [ 34 ].…”

“…Articles were collated based on the types of referent measures used (Additional file 1 : Table S2). The MPD between self-reported energy expenditure and energy expenditure from PA log/diaries for 12 studies ranged from -67.6% to 23.8% (Additional file 1 : figure S2a) [ 80 , 108 , 110 , 111 , 128 , 145 , 152 , 157 , 159 , 160 , 169 , 175 ]. These findings suggest that self-report underestimates energy expenditure compared to activity logs/diaries.…”

“…It is now recommended by the WHO for national surveillance of PA. 1 Since its development, the GPAQ has been translated into and tested in many languages and is used in many countries. 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 In France, the GPAQ has been used to describe and analyse PA and sedentary time of the general population. 17 However, it has not been validated in the French language.…”
