Remediation approach for organic compounds and arsenic co-contaminated soil using the pressurized hot water extraction process

Abstract: Successful remediation of soil with co-existing organics contaminants and arsenic (As) is a challenge as the chemical and remediation technologies are different for each group of pollutants. In this study, the treatment effectiveness of the pressurized hot water (PHW) extraction process was investigated for remediation of soil co-contaminated with phenol, crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and As. An elimination percentage of about 99% was achieved for phenol, and in the range of 63-100% was o… Show more

“…The extracts were centrifuged at 10,000× g for 5 min; then, 0.1 mL of the supernatant was evaporated until dryness in a water bath at 60 °C, and a post-treatment test was conducted as described below. All the samples were prepared and analyzed in triplicate [ 26 ].…”

“…They found that the triterpenoids from I. obliquus have potential therapeutic effects against lung cancer and revealed the molecular basis of their cytotoxic activity against human lung cancer [6]. Furthermore, Kou et al studied the anti-inflammatory effect of triterpenoids from I. obliquus and reported that all lanostanoids remarkably inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production in Molecules 2021, 26, 2467 2 of 14 lipopolysaccharide-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells [7]. In another study, it has been shown that triterpenoids from I. obliquus can confer protection to SH-SY5Y cells against oxidative damage by inhibiting cell apoptosis and by exerting neuroprotective activity against H 2 O 2 induced cell damage [8].…”

“…(Henry & Yonker 2006;Herrero et al 2006). With various degree of selectivity and recoveries/ yields, these treatments are capable to extract a wide range of organic pollutants, including organochlorine pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins (Islam et al 2019;Tagliabue et al 2020).…”

“…In the case of subcritical water extraction, heavy metals and metalloids such as As, Cd and Cu can be removed from the matrix without the need of complexing agents (Islam et al 2019). PLE, SFE and subcritical water extraction are typically not considered for large-scale applications due to their…”

“…Technologies such as pressurised liquid extraction (PLE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and subcritical water extraction have shown promising effectiveness at reducing the content of organic pesticides and heavy metals contained in lignocellulosic waste streams. 54–58 However, they are rarely employed for industrial processing due to their high cost. 57,58 Furthermore, due to the high purity requirements required for human and animal consumption, intense research efforts are required to optimise pre-treatment to achieve maximum contaminant reduction while mitigating deleterious chemical alterations of feedstock compounds, which can significantly reduce downstream efficiency and yield of protein extraction and bioconversion processes.…”
