Renewable energy resources and technologies applicable to Ireland

Abstract: The energy consumed in Ireland is primarily achieved by the combustion of fossil fuels. Ireland's only indigenous fossil fuel is peat; all other fossil fuels are imported. As well as fossil fuels continually becoming more expensive, their use as an energy source also has a negative impact on the environment. Ireland's energy consumption can be separated into 3 divisions; transportation, electricity generation and heat energy. Ireland however has a vast range of high quality renewable energy resources. Ireland … Show more

“…Even though there is no current carbon tax imposed on electricity generation, domestic heating has been affected by the introduction of a carbon tax since 1st of May 2010 in Ireland [29]. A carbon tax may soon be introduced on electricity generation, as electricity generation is one of the largest carbon dioxide emitters along with transportation in Ireland [1]. The penalty rate used is V15 per tonne of carbon dioxide emitted.…”

“…However, tidal power is not a new idea and several barrage type plants were working, the biggest existence 240 MW in Larance, Farance [10]. The tidal power comprises both potential energy and kinetic energy components [6,7]. Hence, either utilizing the kinetic energy for tidal stream energy or constructed a barrage to generate the electricity using the potential energy by storage of water [11].…”

“…The kinetic energy contained within these marine currents can be harnessed using various technologies. The physics is similar to that of wind energy [2], where the power available at any particular site is proportional to the fluid density and the cube of its velocity [3,4]. The biggest difference between the two resources is the density of the working fluid [5].…”
