The effects of canthaxanthin (CTX) on egg production, (average daily feed intake) ADFI, egg quality, and yolk color compared with natural xanthophylls in feedstuffs in laying hens were studied in a 5-wk trial. A total of 280 36-wk-old ISA Brown layers were divided into the following 7 treatments: T1, negative control (30% corn+20% wheat); T2, diet with 50% corn; T3, diet with 5% DDGS; T4, diet with 10% DDGS; T5, T1+0.011% CTX; T6, T1+0.021% CTX; T7, commercial diet with 40% corn. Although ADFI, and egg quality were not affected by dietary treatments, the egg production was higher (P<0.05) in diet supplemented with 0.021% colorant than diet with 50% corn, and diet supplemented 0.011% colorant. Yolk color in layers fed the diet contained 10% DDGS was higher (P<0.05) than the layers fed the T1 diet, and the diet with 5% DDGS. Yolk color score was linearly improved (P<0.05) when the diet supplemented with 0.011%, and 0.021% CTX. Higher yolk color score was also observed (P<0.05) when layers fed commercial diet compared with control diet, and the diet with higher natural xanthophylls. In conclusion, egg production and yolk color were improved when layers fed diet supplemented with colorant.

The examined inoculants were applied during sowing. The presented results of the studies on the symbiotic nitrogen fixation by leguminous plants indicate that the productivity of pea was positively affected by the application of IUNG (noncommercial) inoculant. On the other hand, it is not recommended to use Nitragine^TM separately, as it inhibits the growth of pea. Plants of the ‘Klif’ variety used the symbiotically fixed nitrogen more effectively and demonstrated higher yield component and better phenotypic parameters.

Marigold flower extract, a natural pigment, was used to determine its effect on carcass and skin pigmentation, immunity and growth performance of broiler chickens. Two hundred and forty 1-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were randomly distributed into four treatment groups with six replicates in a randomized block design. Birds were fed basal diet for 42 d with or without supplementation of marigold flower extract at various concentrations, i.e., 0 (MG0, control), 100 (MG100), 150 (MG150) and 200 (MG200) mg/kg of feed, respectively. Feed intake and live body weight were weekly recorded. Carcass and shank color, and antibody titers against Newcastle and Influenza viruses were measured. Results showed that marigold flower extract significantly (p<0.05) improved live body weight and relative thymus weight. However, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and spleen and bursa weights were not significantly affected. Yellowness (b*) of breast and thigh muscles increased by the dietary supplementation of marigold flower extract compared with the control diet. However, lightness (L*), redness (a*) and redness to yellowness ratio (a/b) were not influenced by the treatments. Moreover, Roche color fan scores of the shank skin were increased at market age (d 42). The results revealed that marigold extract enhanced antibody titers against Newcastle and influenza viruses. It was possible to conclude that the dietary supplementation with marigold flower extract at the rate of 200 mg/kg of feed enhanced carcass and shank color, antibody titers against ND and AI, and growth performance of broiler chickens

This experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of different sources of natural pigments on egg quality characteristics and laying hens performance. A completely randomized design, with six treatments and six replicate was used. Experimental treatments were control diet containing yellow corn grains, reference diet containing wheat and barley grain instead of corn, red pepper composed of reference diet and 2% red pepper, dried carrot meal containing reference diet and 5% dried carrot meal, dried tomato pulp composed of reference diet and 5% dried tomato pulp and alfalfa meal containing reference diet and 5% alfalfa meal. Results indicated that egg production and egg quality characteristics (except egg yolk color) were not affected by treatments. In conclusion, in case producers are not interested in an optimum grade of egg yolk color and performance is not under consideration, using of 5% alfalfa meal in wheat-barley based diets is suggested.
