“…Early menarche has been linked to obesity (Prentice & Viner, 2013; Sumi et al, 2018; van Lenthe et al, 1996), type 2 diabetes (Elks et al, 2013; He et al, 2010; Sumi et al, 2018; Zhang, Li, et al, 2019a), gestational diabetes (Chen et al, 2016; Li et al, 2017; Petry et al, 2018; Schoenaker & Mishra, 2017), cardiovascular diseases (X. Chen et al, 2018; Lakshman et al, 2009), endometrial (Dossus et al, 2010), and breast cancers (Ambrosone et al, 2015; Fuhrman et al, 2021; Hsieh et al, 1990), and overall mortality (X. Chen et al, 2018; Lakshman et al, 2009; Zhang, Liu, et al, 2019b). Some of these associations are supported by findings at molecular level at different stages of the disease pathways (Ambrosone et al, 2015; Daraei et al, 2019; Day et al, 2017; Mansoori et al, 2018; Warren Andersen et al, 2014). Furthermore, early age of menarche creates a gap between biological and social maturity, with being biologically adult but socially and legally minor (Gluckman & Hanson, 2006) possibly leading to early sexual debut, potential sexual abuse, alcohol use, and psychosocial difficulties (Deardorff et al, 2005; Golub et al, 2008).…”
