Metamodels play a pivotal role in conceptual modeling as they manifest the abstraction level applied when creating conceptual models. Consequently, design decisions made by the metamodel developer determine utility, capabilities, and expressiveness of the conceptual modeling language-and eventually the created models. However, only limited research defines and applies metrics for analyzing the structure and capabilities of a metamodel, and eventually support the development of new metamodels. This not only concerns general-purpose modeling languages, but also domain-specific ones, which usually undergo shorter update cycles. The paper at hand introduces a generic analysis framework to syntactically analyze modeling languages. The framework is applied to 40 metamodels of domain-specific conceptual modeling languages (DSML). This research establishes a foundation to support metamodel development in the future. The contribution of this paper is threefold: i) an analysis framework for conceptual modeling method metamodels is proposed, ii) results from applying this framework to 40 ADOxx-based DSML metamodels are presented, and iii) a human-based reasoning after comparison of these results with Ecore-based metamodels is conducted.

Enterprise architecture (EA), although matured in more than 30 years of ongoing research, receives more importance with the increasing dependency of business in IT and the growing complexity of IT systems. The integrated management of a companies’ goals, structures, and processes with respect to the business and IT elements, as well as the representation of impacts triggered by planned changes is educated in different ways at many universities all over the world. There are several techniques, methods, tools, and approaches to transfer the knowledge from the educators to the students, giving them the qualification to support their future employers in handling the EA challenges modern companies are facing. This work gives a detailed comparative analysis of more than twenty international educational offers regarding Enterprise Architecture Management, carves out the commonalities and finds two prototypical courses as a best-practice combining the strongest matches for Business Informatics and Computer Science studies alike.

Advanced modeling is a challenging endeavor and good tool support is of paramount importance to ensure that the modeling objectives are met through the efficient execution of tasks. Tools for advanced modeling should not just support basic task modeling functionality such as easy-to-use interfaces for model creation, but also advanced task functionality such as consistency checks and analysis queries. Enterprise Architecture (EA) is concerned with the alignment of all aspects of an organization. Modeling plays a crucial role in EA and the matching of the correct tool to enable task execution is vital for enterprises engaged with EA. Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) reflects recent trends that elevate EA toward a strategic management function within organizations. Tool support for EAM would necessarily include the execution of additional and often implicit advanced modeling tasks that support EAM capabilities. In this paper we report on a study that used the Task-Technology Fit (TTF) theory to investigate the extent to which basic and advanced task execution for EAM is supported by technology. We found that four of the six TTF factors fully supported and one partially supported EAM task execution. One factor was inconclusive. This study provided a insight into investigating tool support for EAM related task execution to achieve strategic EAM goals.
