Research Advances in Bonding Agents for Composite Propellants

Abstract: Bonding agents are auxiliary but critical additives in composite propellants. The bonding agent ameliorates the processing and mechanical performance of propellant through interfacial interaction between particulate fillers and binder matrix. Several bonding agents have been developed over the years to treat the dewetting problem of the composite solid propellant. In this review, we describe the different types of bonding agents, their bonding mechanism and development in the composite propellants. An individu… Show more

“…The role of bonding agents is to adsorb on the surface of the explosive crystals and create chemical bonds with the binder [ 38 ]. Bonding agents such as aziridine derivatives, hydantoin derivatives, borate esters, isocyanurates, ferrocene derivatives and others are described [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…However, as a nonpolar binder, HTPB does not has strong interfacial bonding with polar fillers, and thus undergoes dewetting (debonding) upon deformation. Dewetting will adversely affect the mechanical properties, combustion performance, and storage stability of the propellant. , To improve the performance of the propellant, it is usually necessary to add a variety of functional additives to the propellant formulation, for example, bonding agents, , burning-rate modifiers, , process additives, and plasticizers . However, this makes the propellant composition more complicated and it is more difficult to control quality.…”

“…An application of active binder in contrast to inert binder allows improving propellants ignition properties, but, at the same time, complicates burning rate regulation [18,19]. An introduction of metal or oxide catalysts has proven to be an effective solution to the burning rate adjusting for different SP [20,21].…”
