Rationale Research has been using resilience, sustainability and innovation interchangeably, but there is a lack of research that would provide an insight into how they are related to each other. This systematic literature review thus investigates research on sustainability, innovation and resilience, how they are related to each other, and also identifies major, emerging themes and future research directions on these topics. Procedure We used Bibliometrix software to visually describe articles with the highest number of citations, to present the thematic evolution of the field and present a historical map. The triangulation and thematic groups were identified and compared by two independent researchers. Results Resilience is involved in processes, sustainability is concerned with the outcomes, while innovation represents a pathway to achieving both resilience and sustainability. Resilience can ensure the provision of the system functions in the face of shocks and stresses and sustainability can ensure the adequate performance of the system in general. Three major themes were identified, ‘socio-ecological systems’, ‘transformational innovation’ and ‘political governance’, as well as three emerging themes, ‘food security and agriculture’, ‘businesses and finance’ and ‘interconnected systems’. There is a need for longitudinal, multi-scale and interdisciplinary research that would explore various aspects of integrating these concepts. Conclusion There is a great overlap between the concepts of resilience, sustainability and innovation. Future research could study these concepts in relation to each other. The Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI) aims at combatting land degradation while achieving socio-economic development across the Sahel through a mosaic of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) and restoration practices. As the Global Environment Facility (GEF) is the main funding mechanism for Land Degradation Neutrality related projects, we have analysed its previous SLM projects in four pilot countries in an effort to assess their capacity to foster scaling interventions and fast track progress towards the GGWI objectives. We developed a literature based scaling evaluation framework and scoring methods to standardize project ratings in terms of performance and sustainability along seven evaluation domains. We found that projects perform better over time particularly in terms of monitoring, financing and resilience, but are overall only moderately likely to achieve sustainable benefits allowing of scaling of interventions. While these efforts should be maintained and further pursued, we also recommend special attention to be placed on enforcing mechanisms for new SLM regulations, empowering vulnerable groups and ensuring sufficient capacity and finances for sustaining achievements even during periods of political or climatic instability

It is more and more acknowledged that agroecological innovations, such as agroforestry practices, should be co-created through a combination of research and traditional knowledge, be context adaptable, and meet the needs of producers and consumers. The word ''innovation'' recognises that agroforestry practices do exist everywhere in the world. However, to be able to effectively respond to global challenges and changes (demography and social changes, climate, local to international markets), speaking about ''innovations'' implies that these practices could be improved or transformed or reintroduced everywhere they had disappeared or are in decline. This reality is still current despite the significant number of research and innovation programmes, the volume of mobilized funds and the number of participating organizations. Increasing adoption of agroforestry practices also requires long term planning and coordination because trees' life cycles are often longer than human life. This special issue includes papers on some agroforestry innovations that merit consideration for scaling up, on successful experiences that answer priorities expressed by stakeholders while taking into account their constraints, and on systemic approaches and frameworks to the development of more comprehensive perspectives on scaling up.
