Research Communication: A Buckwheat Protein Product Suppresses 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine–Induced Colon Carcinogenesis in Rats by Reducing Cell Proliferation

Abstract: This study was conducted to examine the effect of consumption of buckwheat protein product (BWP) on 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colon tumor in rats. Male growing Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing either casein or BWP (net protein level, 200 g/kg; n = 20/group) for 124 d. The rats were gavaged weekly with DMH (20 mg/kg body) for the first 8 wk. Food intake and growth were unaffected by dietary manipulation. Dietary BWP caused a 47% reduction in the incidence of colonic adenocarcinoma (P < 0.… Show more

“…Buckwheat proteins products (BWP) are acknowledged as preventive nutrients (Liu et al 2001). They are also associated with the suppression of colon carcinogenesis by reducing cell proliferation, and with the suppression of mammary carcinogenesis by lowering serum estradiol.…”

“…The amino acid composition of buckwheat proteins is well balanced and of a high biological value , although the protein digestibility is relatively low (Liu et al 2001). Buckwheat grains are an important source of microelements, such as: Zn, Cu, Mn, Se (Stibilj et al 2004), and macroelements: K, Na, Ca, Mg (Wei et al 2003).…”

“…Buckwheat seeds are richer in protein compared with rice and wheat. Buckwheat protein improves health in various ways, notably reducing serum cholesterol (Kayashita et al 1995), suppressing gallstones and tumors (Tomotake et al 2000;Liu et al 2001), and inhibiting the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (Ma et al 2006). Moreover, buckwheat is the only cereal that contains rutin, hence it is a beneficial source of this flavonoid (Holasova et al 2002).…”

“…Due to containing nutritional ingredients with high biological value it is an important food source for animal and human consumption. Moreover, diets that contain buckwheat have been linked to many health-benefi cial effects such as: lowered risk of developing high cholesterol and blood pressure, less progression in stenosis and atherosclerosis, protection against breast and other hormone-dependent cancers as well as heart disease and diabetes [5][6][7][8]. The buckwheat's lipid-lowering activity is largely due to its rich supply of fl avonoids, particularly rutin.…”
