Research contributions to managing transit service reliability

Abstract: Service reliability problems are a major concern shared by transit system users and operators. Unreliable service leads to additional vehicle requirements and higher operating costs; passengers suffer increased wait time and higher travel time uncertainty, leading to a general dissatisfaction with service and the possibility of seeking other means of transport. Because of the significance of this problem, considerable research attention has been focused in recent years on developing ways to improve service rel… Show more

“…A second effect of high occupancy levels on waiting times is the possibility of triggering bus bunching (Abkowitz and Tozzi, 1987). When a bus is full and does not stop to pick up passengers at a bus stop (or if it stops but it is unable to load all passengers waiting), a larger number of passengers than is expected are left to wait for the next bus, which will need to stop for a longer period of time to board the increased number of passengers, presuming it too has capacity to accept the additional passenger load.…”

“…With short headways and riders arriving randomly in relation to scheduled service, reliability may be better reflected in the ability to maintain headways rather than adhere to the schedule (Abkowitz and Tozzi, 1987;Hundenski, 1998). The third service reliability measure examines bus run times.…”

“…The third service reliability measure examines bus run times. Variations in run times reflect the composite effects of disruptions to service associated with traffic, signal timing, on-street parking, passenger activity, and driver behavior (Sterman and Schofer, 1976;Abkowitz and Tozzi, 1987).…”

“…Abkowitz vd.
