Research issues in symbiotic simulation

Abstract: Symbiotic simulation is a paradigm in which a simulation system and a physical system are closely associated with each other. This close relationship can be mutually beneficial. The simulation system benefits from real-time measurements about the physical system which are provided by corresponding sensors. The physical system, on the other side, may benefit from the effects of decisions made by the simulation system. An important concept in symbiotic simulation is that of the what-if analysis process which is … Show more

“…Khan (in Taylor et al, 2015, p. 649) proposed "Big Simulation" as sets of coupled simulations that take big data input and produce big data output in near to real time. Symbiotic simulation has emerged as a possible approach to integrating simulation with Digital Twins, IoT and Big Data (Aydt, et al, 2009;Yang, Shen, & Wang, 2018). Nelson (2016, p.4) suggested that the success of data analytics in business and industry will "lead simulation users to expect the same sort of fine-grained, conditional analysis from their simulations".…”

“…Dynamic Data-Driven Application Systems (DDDASs) [Darema 2004] are computational systems that dynamically incorporate data from a physical system into executing computations, thereby providing the ability of the application to dynamically steer the measurement process. A related concept known as symbiotic simulations emphasizes the inherent mutual benefits derived by the physical system and computational simulations through this interaction [Fujimoto et al 2002;Aydt et al 2009]. Such systems use networks of fixed and/or mobile sensors, possibly coupled with the use of crowdsourced data to develop a model of the current state of the system.…”

“…In addition to this, our literature survey explores some other recent related researches. In [9] Heiko Aydt et al provide a general overview of the state of the art symbiotic simulation applications and discussed some of the most important research issues to be addressed in this regard. Symbiotic simulation is closely related to dynamic data-driven application systems (DDDAS), that entails the applications's ability to dynamically inject data into the execution system and steer the measurement process.…”
