Research Methods Priorities in Geriatric Palliative Medicine

Abstract: Continuing the momentum of geriatric palliative medicine research achieved during the past decade requires a focus on research methods priorities that span the continuum of research from small pilot studies testing new interventions to large multisite studies evaluating implementation of proven interventions and models of care. Each phase of this continuum presents unique challenges for investigators who are designing, conducting, and reporting results of these scientific endeavors. The goal of this article is… Show more

“…While the majority of palliative care programs for PD are based in academic centers, the majority of PD patients do not receive care at these centers. Thus, as successful interventions are developed they must be translated into community practice to impact public health [110]. Implementation research refers to the study of methods that influence the integration of evidence-based interventions into practice settings and include efforts to identify, understand, and overcome barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration and scale-up of evidence-based interventions, tools, policies and guidelines.…”

“…Palliative care is a multi-disciplinary specialty treating patients with serious and life-limiting illness by managing symptoms, facilitating autonomy and providing information 3 . In order to improve the care of patients with serious life-limiting illness, a better understanding of the optimal models for providing inpatient palliative care is necessary 4 .…”
