Research of Energy and Ecological Indicators of a Compression Ignition Engine Fuelled with Diesel, Biodiesel (RME-Based) and Isopropanol Fuel Blends

Abstract: This article presents the results of a study of energy and ecological indicators at different engine loads (BMEP) adjusting the Start of Injection (SOI) of a Compression Ignition Engine fuelled with blends of diesel (D), rapeseed methyl ester (RME)-based biodiesel and isopropanol (P). Fuel blends mixed at D50RME45P5, D50RME40P10 and D50RME30P20 proportions were used. Alcohol-based fuels, such as isopropanol, were chosen because they can be made from different biomass-based feedstocks and used as additives with… Show more

“…Research investigating the types of biodiesel and alcohols that can be used in diesel engines as alternative fuels has been performed for many years [6]. The feedstocks for oil used in the production of biodiesel must be inedible so as to not affect food safety [7,8]. If biodiesel is used directly in a diesel engine at 100% concentration, it will cause malfunctions in the diesel fuel system.…”

“…The use of biodiesel allows significant reduction in environmental pollution with particulate matter [15,16]; thus, its use as a substitute for fossil diesel is very welcome [17]. Even though RME is the dominant type of biodiesel in Lithuania [18,19], trying out second-generation bio-diesel blends (biomass to liquid (BTL) [20,21], hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO) [22,23], and other blends with biobutanol would be rational. When investing in and improving the technology for the production of second-generation biofuels, the progress of the process towards increasing commercial use can be observed.…”

“…The benefits are limited, and different problems emerge when a single alternative fuel is used [30]. Scientists suggest that sustainability can be achieved by using fuel blends to balance the performance and emission characteristics [7,17,[31][32][33][34]. Recent research reveals that using alcohols and biodiesels is one of the primary ways to decrease the emissions that disturb the environment [22,[35][36][37][38].…”
