Power quality is gaining a lot of interest lately by researchers and engineers as electricity is a vital part of our daily life. The aim of this paper is to survey some of the recent existing systems, techniques and methods that are being used to monitor power quality. The survey focuses mainly on power quality monitoring systems which are composed of various tools, software, communication links etc. that work together as one coherent system. Another goal is to develop an understanding about the quality management in the area of power industry. Some of the methods and techniques that are presented discuss about power quality meter placement techniques. Finding the best locations to place the power quality monitors in the electrical grid is done by developing algorithms and approaches to find the appropriate number of monitors and the appropriate locations to place them in order to reduce the cost of the PQM system and increase its efficiency. The paper discusses the basic idea of each method or system in order to have an understanding about its importance and role. Then, a simple comparison is made between the techniques in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. After that, international industry practices and guidelines for power quality monitoring and management are discussed. Lastly, some examples for the efforts that are made in the area of power quality improvement are discussed. , investigated the power quality monitoring system over the internet. The power quality monitoring system is defined as a collection of technologies including a web server, computers, communication networks and specialized PQM. The proposed paper discusses the realization of a system prototype able to perform a permanent monitoring of a switchboard in order to allow the manufacturer the complete management of all the measurable quantities in the switchboard, specially the sensed voltage for each line. The main purpose is to prevent any fault that can affect the switchboard and provide an instant alarming if anomalous values are revealed. The significant aspect of our prototype is the internetworking between several standard network protocols. In fact, the acquisition network sends the acquired data using the EIA 485 serial protocol. These data are then collected into an embedded web server ad-hoc developed. The server can be connected to the Internet in a wired and/or wireless way using the IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) and the IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) protocols. Finally, the web server uses standard TCP/IP protocols, such as HTTP to manage the web pages and SMTP to dispatch automatic alarm notifications via e-mails.

The power communication system based on synchronous digital hierarchy(SDH) optical, transmission technology is an important component to ensure the safety and stability of power network. After, years of development, the network has been gradually mature, but it still has many problems, such as the weak, structure of the communication network, insufficient network transmission capacity, weak network access and network management. Therefore, it is necessary to do the research and take simulation for the power communication system based on SDH optical transmission technology. The paper builds up the simulation, platform of SDH network in power communication system based on the EXATA simulation tools. For SDH, device, we implemented functions including multiplexing, demultiplexing and digital cross-connection. And, the simulation analysis provides a great theoretical support for constructing equipment models and network, topology.
