Research on the bonding properties of vitrified bonds with porous diamonds and the grinding performance of porous diamond abrasive tools

Abstract: Ordinary diamond presents the disadvantages of poor self-sharpening and concentrated grinding stress when it is used as an abrasive. Moreover, this kind of diamond cannot be well wetted by the vitri ed bond, resulting in a lower holding force of the binder to the abrasives (i.e., the diamond is easy to detach from the binder matrix during grinding). These comprehensive factors not only reduce the surface quality of the processed workpiece, but also hinder the processing e ciency. In order to solve these proble… Show more

“…When the content of BaO appears low, the vitrified bond melts into a viscous fluid at the 750 • C sintering temperature and Ba 2+ also obtains a high diffusion rate. Furthermore, the surface of the diamond abrasive presents a negative potential [41], and Ba 2+ will migrate to the diamond interface under the effect of electrostatic attraction, thus enriching at the diamond surface. Ba 2+ at the diamond surface will also attract O 2 from the vitrified bond, finally improving the wet property of the bond-diamond abrasive.…”

“…The porosity and poor wetting can weaken the material and reduce its static me chanical properties such as hardness, tensile, and compression strength [51]. Conversely they can enhance dynamic properties such as impact energy absorption [52]. Porosity and incomplete wetting create localized weakness within the matrix, allowing for more energy absorption during dynamic impact events as the stress concentrates on these defects, re sulting in higher impact energy values [53].…”

“…There are many kinds of diamond tools, including bonded diamond grits, CVD diamond, loose diamond abrasives, poly crystal diamonds, single crystal diamond, etc. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Among them, the application amount of metal-bonded diamond tools prepared by powder metallurgy is the largest [ 5 ].…”
