Research Progress in the Design and Synthesis of Herbicide Safeners: A Review

Abstract: Detoxification plays an important role in herbicide action. Herbicide safeners selectively protect crops from herbicide injury without reducing the herbicidal efficiency against the target weeds. With the large-scale use of herbicides, herbicide safeners have been widely used in sorghum, wheat, rice, corn, and other crops. In recent years, an increasing number of unexpected new herbicide safeners have been designed. The varieties, structural characteristics, uses, and synthetic routes of commercial herbicide s… Show more

“…To eliminate such negative effects and to raise crop yields, herbicide safeners (also called herbicide antidotes or detoxifiers) are successfully used. Herbicide safeners [ 39 , 40 , 41 ] can be defined as agrochemicals that are able to neutralize phytotoxins in plants, thus protecting crop plants from herbicide injury. Safeners are harmless to crop plants (or even have a growth-stimulating effect), but do not affect the activity of herbicides against weeds.…”

“…Weeds directly competed with crops for nutrients, moisture, and light, which can cause over 80% crop yield loss. , A lot of herbicides have been widely used in agricultural production for weed control, which greatly increased the crop production. ,, Target-based drug design (TBDD) has attracted great attention because of its numerous advantages, including high selectivity, high efficiency, and safety for nontarget organisms . There are currently about 26 herbicide sites of action, including acetohydroxyacid synthase, acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase, protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase, and 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvatedioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicides, and so on .…”
