Research progress on preparation technology of oxide dispersion strengthened steel for nuclear energy

Abstract: Nuclear energy is a low-carbon, safe, efficient, and sustainable clean energy. The new generation of nuclear energy systems operate in harsher environments under higher working temperatures and irradiation doses, while traditional nuclear power materials cannot meet the requirements. The development of high-performance nuclear power materials is a key factor for promoting the development of nuclear energy. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel contains a high number density of dispersed nano-oxides and def… Show more

“…Nowadays, increased energy demand and the necessity of controlling worldwide CO 2 emissions have made the option of energy production from nuclear reactions by fission and/or fusion very attractive [ 31 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 , 100 ]. As a consequence of the development in the field of energy production by fission reactions, Generation IV nuclear reactors became a real international challenge as a safe, innovative, durable, and economical method for energy production.…”

“…The main disadvantage of this method is the complexity and rarity of equipment that can conduct additive laser melting, and as a consequence, questionable economic and technological efficiency, a significant limitation on the size of the finished steel. ODS steel made by SLM method has a low density, and the average size of nanooxides and dispersity is not as good as that of mechanical alloying [16].…”

“…Uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) are commonly used metal elements in the field of nuclear engineering. Ceramic nuclear fuels, including oxides [1], carbides [2], nitrides [3], and silicides [4] have excellent nuclear combustion properties, and are considered as ideal candidates for nuclear fuels [1][2][3][4]. However, U and Pu are radioactive, which can cause human damage and environmental hazards.…”
