Research through design for energy transition: two case studies in Germany and The Netherlands

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to enlarge the body of knowledge on research through design (RtD) methods that can be employed by landscape architects and others working on (but not limited to) sustainable energy transition. Design/methodology/approach -A specific approach to RtDqualitative landscape structure analysis (QLSA)is introduced and illustrated by means of diagrams and photographs. Two case studies showcase the application of QLSA for research on solar parks in the Netherlands and research on w… Show more

“…Both landscape and design research and practice have a longstanding tradition in transdisciplinarity and methodological pluralism [125,146]. As a landscape includes both a physical reality and a mental construction (through cultural reading and perception), a landscape approach requires different scientific methods from both the natural sciences (empirical) and the humanities (interpretative) [132]. The combination of the comprehensive nature of the landscape and the merging capacity of design are useful to enhance transdisciplinarity and coherence.…”

“…Landscape is both physical structure and human perception and something in between. The physical structure is based on the natural morphologies, overlaid and modified by land-use textures and infrastructures (Stremke and Sch€ obel, 2019). Some research shows that the scale of environmental health problems has expanded from household (e.g.…”

“…Existing research on landscape and renewable energy has been largely focusing on wind energy (e.g. Pasqualetti, Gipe, & Righter, 2002;Stremke & Schöbel, 2019;Thayer & Freeman, 1987), hydropower energy (e.g. Ferrario & Castiglioni, 2017;Frolova, 2010;Rodriguez, 2012) and high-voltage powerlines (e.g.…”
