Residual Translational and Rotational Errors after kV X-Ray Image-Guided Correction of Prostate Location Using Implanted Fiducials

Abstract: On the basis of the residual setup error measurements, the margin required after one to two online X-ray corrections for the patients enrolled in this study would be at minimum 2 mm. The contribution of intrafractional motion to residual random errors has to be evaluated.

“…Unfortunately, we did not use an image-guided system, and some reports suggest that image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) achieved by cone beam computer tomography and ultrasound can spare more OARs and ensure an accurate target volume [38,39,40,41]. Applying the IGRT system could evaluate the irradiation dose of the PTV, which may be efficacious against cancers without increasing toxicity [40,41,42]. Sometimes, the IGRT system requires implanted fiducials in the tumor [40], and lipiodol is a direct surrogate for CBCT image guidance for radiotherapy of HCC after TACE [43].…”

“…In the case of target volume restricted in the primary tumor, boost irradiation, or intensity-modulated radiation therapy, organ motion should be more intensely considered. It has been reported that movement of the prostate or prostate bed could induce additional systematic and random errors compared with the position error based on bony structure [7,8,9,17,20]. However, because of the variation and individualization of organ motion or deformity, the prediction of the pattern according to specific risk factors might be faroff and need more experience with IGRT [1,26,27].…”
